New NBP Course Beginning September 22, 2011

NNAPA is launching a new course in Natural Botanical Perfumery beginning September 22, 2011.

NNAPA currently offers a single fully paid scholarship to a randomly chosen student each course session; if interested in scholarship information, please contact the administrator at NNAPA.

About the NNAPA course:

Antiquarian Perfumery/Natural Botanical Perfumery is a non-accredited course, and no prerequisites are required except a passion and desire to learn Natural Botanical Perfumery from the ground up. This course is recommended for those who desire to begin a career in NBP, or those who wish to broaden their educational horizons.

Course tutor: Justine Crane. Justine Crane has been actively studying and formulating specifically for perfume since 2003, and actively making and selling scented natural handmade soaps, balms, butters, etc, since 1996. Justine took nine months to study, evaluating essences daily, formulating for soaps, butters, balms, bombs, melts, and oil-based perfumes. In October 2007, Justine started a study group called Black Nails, just herself, and two delightful women who were as interested in honing their perfumery skills as she was herself, and they spent a year studying Jean Carles, Edward Sagarin, Poucher, Verrill, Arctander, and obscure catalogs such as the Buyer's Guide & Cyclopedia for Soaps, Perfumery and Cosmetics, circa 1938. They conducted trials, shared formulas, evaluated essences and shared insights -- it was a marvelous education they created together. When it was done, Justine opened her shop and began peddling her wares.

The NNAPA aka Natural Perfume Academy is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Instruction will be given via forums, formal and informal chat sessions, and by units. Students will be given specific time frames in which to read, research and participate in each unit before the next unit is open for study and discussion.

An evaluation work book and course textbook are provided to each participating student and its cost is included with the tuition. A recommended reading list is provided in the work book. No other books or texts are necessary to complete the course.

Topics covered in the course include, but are not limited to, a brief perfume history, popular historic perfumery ingredients, the evolution of the perfume culture, safety issues, endangered species and cruelty in perfumery, storage and shelf-life of raw materials, chemical constituents of perfume ingredients, glossary of terminology, the perfumers studio, the perfumers palette, notes, accords and chords, evaluation of raw materials, supplemental scent vocabulary, continued olfactory training activities, advanced perfumes tools and techniques, tinctures, evulsions, dilutions, scales, required lab ware, oil and solid perfume making instruction, basic instruction in the production of soaps, butters, balms, massage and bath oils, creation of perfume, vertical and horizontal perfume trials, intuitive perfumery formulation, base compound formulation, advanced composition techniques, discussion of sacrificial perfume materials, finishing, “fining”, clarifying perfume compositions, creating custom perfumes, creating a reverse brief, reading and interpreting a brief, suggested raw materials to compliment the perfumers palette, and more.

The notes are so well combined and blended you cannot (well, I cannot tease them apart). Jameel Eau de Parfum is a scent of exquisite white florals and citrus -- bright and effervescent, the epitome of spring. If you love white florals, then Jameel is your girl.

She begins with a bright flash of citrus & gorgeous green, fresh petitgrain, then mellows to sweet, white flowers (neroli, gardenia) and segues into osmanthus, oudh and labdanum ~ luscious and feminine and tenacious, lasting a few hours before re-application is necessary. The gardenia used in Jameel Eau de Parfum is a many times over infusion in fractionated coconut oil, and it is surprisingly tenacious; lends a lot of its lush white floral to the composition. A tentative date of Saturday, May 14, 2011 has been set as the day I attempt to pull off a scent event; an exposition, if you will, of and about Natural Botanical Perfumery. There are several options for advertising here, all of which will cost me paper and ink and a little pavement pounding. The setting for this late spring soiree is in the famous Tower District in Fresno, in the garden of a mansion built in the 1920's. I need to keep this simple. No admission, yet reservations must be made, and scented food samples will be served, as well as perfume (and tea?) samples. I'm courting the local tea house to find out if they'd be interested in co-hosting the event -- an afternoon of fragrant offerings of tea and perfume! I will talk about NBP, and if the tea people are interested, they will talk about tea, and hopefully by the afternoon's end, we will both have a few new customers, and some new found interest in what we create.

If you live in the Fresno area, or within 100 miles, please drop in to the scent event, and then go out to the Tower for some fun.

New NBP Course to Begin in March at NNAPA

Nature's Nexus Academy of Perfuming Arts is set to begin the next year-long course in Natural Botanical Perfumery beginning March 2011. You'll have to check the site for details as I don't get into the administrative end of things very much, I simply tutor the course.

Once again, the course manual and workbook have been rewritten to reflect changes in methods and manner of streamlining the process -- in other words, unfussing the whole business of building perfume. We instruct in all sorts of perfume formulating modalities at NNAPA -- from the Carles method, the Curtis method, the old English and French methods, to the ever popular "intuitive method". Our course is tailored toward busy folks, folks with families, jobs and real lives outside the perfume community. Truthfully, the course could easily be taught in 4 to 6 months, but it would require daily participation, daily reading and study, daily trial studies -- I may suggest to the administration that we offer a crash course of sorts for those in the crashing mode.

We've also added a short bit of instruction on steam/hydro distillation for essential oil and hydrolats, and the newest version of the manual will include instruction on the butane extraction method of obtaining absolutes. The manual and workbook with accompanying Essence Evaluation Kit and Formulators Kit are stand-alones, you wouldn't need to take the course to get substantial benefit from the instruction with those items in your educational arsenal. They too can be got at NNAPA.

There are several items at The Scented Djinn Etsy Apothecary that are on sale right now ~ Bitter Amber Parfum Body Butter at $8.80 for a half-ounce jar is more a solid perfume than a body butter, though the base isn't made with waxes, it is made with organic kokum butter and organic hemp seed oil. The scent, when rubbed on the skin, begins with high bitter-sweet notes of vanilla, benzoin and labdanum, then moves softly toward lush florals and ends sweet and warm and musky on the skin -- for hours. The perfume portion of this body butter began with a lush amber base of vanilla, benzoin, labdanum, clary sage absolute, ambriene and summer rose attar, then additions of tonka, rose, cananga, honey, lemon and fresh ginger were included; more was added to give the fragrance more of a floral heart, so in went jasmine sambac, an infusion of Brazilian jasmine grandiflorum, and lush, woody santal. Well worth the price of admission.

Changes for The Scented Djinn Etsy Apothecary in the New Year

After a series of prophetic dreams (yes, I do believe in that "stuff") directing me to make The Scented Djinn Etsy Apothecary just that-- an apothecary-- I have slowly but surely been doing so. I'm removing all the liquid parfums and placing them on ArtFire in an all indulgent luxury layout, while at Etsy I'm sticking with my roots. Where I began in this journey which led me to where I am today was as a magic maker, a novice root worker, someone who put a little mystery of the mojo into the soaps and body oils and elixirs along with the plant healing and aromatherapy. Those were the good old days.

In the next few months watch for the phasing out completely of the liquid high end parfums on Etsy, and the incoming-- what? Wholesome, natural, high quality, simple skin care products, solid aromatics, and hand distilled hydrosols.

Made in a base of organic hemp seed oil and organic sunflower oil, and enhanced with generous amounts of antique sandalwood oil and a hint of aged patchouli, this elixir is delicious face food. So heavily scented, it could almost pass as a perfume oil, but please do use it on your face! This rich elixir sinks right into dry, thirsty skin, leaving it soft, radiant and exotically scented.

Art Show Tomorrow November 20, 10 am to 4 pm

Tomorrow I showcase The Scented Djinn, and Natural Botanical Perfumery, at the 4th annual Madera County Arts Council's Holiday Art Affair featuring over 30 artists and fine crafters selling original works. There is also going to be a book signing by children's author Monica Montelongo, and illustrator Rosemary Montelongo, as well as music, food, and youth art education. This event will be held tomorrow, November 20th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Circle Gallery (mall) at 1653 N. Schnoor Avenue, Madera, CA (for more information call 559-661-7005). It's supposed to rain. But! The Scented Djinn's wares will be under the porch on the north strip of offices, right on the end.

Even with the rain in the forecast, I'm still very much looking forward to this event. I'm hoping to talk to some young people about perfumery and perhaps garner some interest there. If you are able to make it out to Madera for this event, please stop by and say hello.

The reason for another point of access? More exposure, and an outlet for the higher end items, such as custom perfume compositions, fancy bottle styles, and those perfumes which use more expensive and rare aromatics in higher concentrations than what goes on the Etsy site.

The change in the weather has really brought something out here at The Scented Djinn's dimly lit studio -- out with the old, in with the new, and in with some stuff that hasn't been here for a while!

The Scented Djinn is set to donate more to Nicole Reinert (Littleflowers) through sales of perfume, so, for this one we have two of our loveliest creations, our eaux fraiche ~ Khamsa and La Tubereuse for one great price, with all proceeds going toward Nicole Reinert and her endeavors to create a chemical free living space. Both of these beautiful creations come packaged in 35 ml glass spray bottles for your spritzing pleasure.

Khamsa eau Fraiche is a soft, ethereal green scent which evokes cool shade in summer, clear sparkling water and sun-warmed skin.

Great opening of fresh, crisp cilantro and citrus that mellows through the day to soft, powdery patchouli. Absolutely fantastic for spraying directly after the shower -- spray in your hair, between your toes, on your bum bum -- anywhere! Khamsa is a light scent that stays with you all day.

The Scented Djinn is building up quite a collection of hydrosols, and more are coming in the near future. A few customers and friends have told me they're using the hydrosols in some of their products -- the lime has found its way into a lime and coconut perfume, and the kombu sea kelp was poured into a batch of soap! Talk about multi-purpose!

Some people think hydrosols are limited in use, but I'm here to tell you, it ain't so. Did you know you can drink them? Add them to cake batter for a touch of flavor and scent? Imagine a lovely white cake with a hint of key lime or luscious nectarine flavor. What a treat! And as some people have been doing, adding them to their own creative processes -- perfumes and soap!

You can spray the hydrosols on your wet hair after a shower, or even add a bit to your scent-free conditioner for a little extra oomph. What hydrosols do for your skin is beyond amazing. Add them to your facial scrubs or simply use them as toners or skin refreshers. It's all good.

It has been brought to the Dinn's attention that customers of old (not old customers) are asking for a retro fall line up of natural skincare and scented wonders ~ so a few scents of yore will be turned from their original bath fizzy form into butters and oils. Lovies like Marguerite with ylang, patchouli, bergamot, rose and vanilla sprinkled with irridescent glitter and made in a base of gooey mango butter; Meditatio with frankincense, grapefruit, ho wood, bergamot, sandalwood, myrrh, clary sage and cedarwood with a hint of rose, and Hot Buttered Hippy with a cacophonic blend of luscious patchoulis, a bit of butter CO2 and a liberal dosing of sheer golden mica. Sound good? Watch for these retro-blends, and more, in the coming weeks. Ciao!

18th Annual Harvest Arts & Peace Festival

Once again The Scented Djinn will be presenting fabulous natural handmade soaps, skincare and Natural Botanical Perfume at the nursery in Prather. This year is particularly special since this event almost didn't happen. Due to issues beyond the nursery's control they were left with a potential parking space limit, and with an event that draws several hundred people a year, parking is crucial. Those concerns have been put to rest and the show will go on! Mark your calendars for the 18th Annual Harvest Arts & Peace Festival, October 9th 10am-5pm, and October 10th 10am-4pm. This isn't just a craft show, it's a party! There's free music both days, crafters and artisans of all handmade items, great vegetarian and vegan foods, and plants, plants, plants! Always fun.

Atay Extrait is a sweet, creamy, spiced green tea with rich floral notes of plumeria and tuberose. Atay unfolds on the skin like a blossoming flower, opening with notes of crisp ginger and bergamot with hints of cassia, then slowly undulates toward a rich, creamy, honied floral with soft rounded notes of sensual sandalwood, and ends with delicious vanilla tinged with honey and plumeria and tuberose and santal.

Made with a year-old tincture of organic China green Yunnan Jade Supreme, a black tea absolute and cabreuva wood co-blend, an aged tincture of Swedish bee goo concentrate, fresh ginger, bergamot, ginger lily, cassia, plumeria, tuberose, santal and vanilla Bourbon.

Were there enough capital letters in that announcement? I think NOT! Well, yeah, okay, enough of that already.

The Scented Djinn Etsy Apothecary is selling off its stock of scrubs in pairs at really, really, really (one more really?) cheap prices ~ $6.50 for two bottles of scrub (I was selling these for $12.50 a bottle last fall). What you get when you order is our choice, but I'll try to mix 'em up for you.

The scrubs available are Karima, Haseki and Mahidevran, made with all natural, and in some cases, all organic, ingredients.
