The Scented Djinn

So, Alhulm, the Dreaming Incense, is being just a little bit difficult. It won't stay lit. It will burn for about 10 or 12 minutes, then it slowly stops burning. It could be that it isn't completely dry yet, but I think it might be more like the resin content is interfering with a consistent burn. This isn't necessarily a bad thing -- inconvenient to those of you who torch your incense, but nothing to worry about if you use an electric incense burner or an candle lit oil diffuser to 'warm' your incense. In fact, that's the preferred method of 'burning' incense; low heat, slow 'burn' = long-lasting, beautiful, true-to-source smelling incense. Believe it or not, I don't have an electric incense heater -- it's on the wish list, but as of yet, I haven't made the investment. Too many beautiful resins and woods and herbs out there to buy and learn about to fuss with a fancy pants (much needed) electric burner.

For this newest Creme Parfum, we dug deep -- into the box of rare and exquisite aromatics, the box with the oldest patchouli and frankincense, the richest and rarest floral absolutes, and the strangest and most surprising scents in the world and came up with this little gem ~ an incense inspired floral creme parfum we call Coeur de l'encens -- the heart of incense. We used a gorgeous (never used in our studio before) 13-year-old finely extracted frankincense absolute, a luscious and sweet jasmine sambac concrete, and a generous amount of our limited Uttar Pradesh steam-distilled organic rose essential oil. All together, blended with the raw unrefined super sweet beeswax and soft creamy shea butter, this creme parfum smells like a fine soft powdery floral incense. Stunning and not to be missed.

I love serendipitous meetings! Yesterday, after spending a bit of time wrapping and labeling two small batches of soap, I walked down to the tea shop (Wilwand) to deliver some of the soap. After sitting at the tea bar for an hour or so, and drinking down three cups of a magical blend that was out of this world beautiful, I opened the bag of goodies to show the shop keep. I had brought three Sarasvati soaps, and seven Lavender Kyphi soaps, plus a sample of Sarasvati for the owner to use, and a sample of the newest compounded incense resin and parfum, Thracian Rose ~ well, the incense parfum got worn and burned, and four bars of soap were sold before I left the place! I do have to admit, though, that these latest scent wares have come out stunningly fragrant and hit the spot olfactorily with a lot of people. The reason I brought only three of the Sarasvati soap? The Egyptian Kyphi Parfum Oil is now ready and is listed on our Etsy site for sale. We formulated the parfum oil using two kinds of frankincense oil, a carterii with high pine notes, and a rivae with soft woody warm note, then we added a vintage myrrh, a vintage lemongrass oil, a bit of green cognac for the wine aspect, warm, sweet benzoin, galangal, mastic, cedarmoss, camphor, labdanum, pine, cedarwood, cassia, santal, orris, galbanum, and honey. Made in organic jojoba. 10 mls roll-on bottle.

New novelty items specific to certain special occasions will be listed at The Scented Djinn soon. Our first listing is for Witch's Water, a lovely citrus and herb floral perfume water based on an old hoodoo Florida Water recipe. The Scented Djinn has taken the liberty of changing things up in this formulation, making it perfect for repelling goblins, ghouls, trolls, zombies, ghosts, vampires, and the occasional dragon. Not recommended for use on werewolves or Bigfoot(s) -- that's an entirely different water altogether.

The newest, and technically first, in a series of oil based natural perfumes is being worked on ~ Yasmina, a gorgeous jasmine grandiflorum soliflore (which really isn't a soliflore at all since we add other elements to make the jasmine shine). Our new line of oil-based perfumes are made using organic jojoba oil and the finest essential oils, absolutes, concretes, waxes, and CO2's we can find. Coming soon!

Quite a few years ago, The Scented Djinn made and sold shampoo bars with such lovely herbs as amla and henna and beer. We've recently resurrected our shampoo bar notebook from the Bin-of-Many-Formulas, and created a new shampoo bar -- a cross between our famous Drunken Lout Shampoo Bar that was made with Guinness and honey, and one of our lovely herb infused shampoo bars, to bring to you (soon) Drunken Lout & Nettles Shampoo Bar. We also mixed things up a bit and made these using a hot soaping process instead of our usual gentle cold process soap making technique. This batch of Drunken Lout & Nettles Shampoo Bar is infused with coconut cream, pimento berry oil, and palmarosa, making it both masculine and feminine, which, as confusing as it may sound, actually works out beautifully scent-wise. We hope to have these on our Etsy site by early to mid-September.

Ansali Aromatic Soap is just that -- aromatic! But besides being really heavily scented, it's got some skin-loving stuff in it as well, like passionflower extract and coconut cream, and patchouli! Key Lime and Organic Rosemary Whole Copper Distilled Hydrosol ~ ready!

Mourning Incense was created to help alleviate feelings of loss. It was carefully formulated to instill joy and hope. Made without the traditional inclusion of dried fruit or the high quantity of dry herbs, this kyphi-style incense is more resinous, fluid, and more deeply sweet than our other kyphi incense. A very small bit goes a long, long way. We began with intensely fragrant oakmoss, sandalwood chips, and orris root and soaked them in red wine for five days, then all the resins, frankincense, myrrh, white fir, elemi, and pinon were powdered and boiled in a vat of honey until they became a cohesive mass of sweet, fragrant resinified honey. We then added the oakmoss, santal, orris and wine to the honey blend during the last stages of cooking to bind all the ingredients. After the honey resin cooled, we then spread a layer of jasmine concrete over the top and began a process of weeks of kneading until the 'honey dough' was firm and more or less dry. Use when ...

  Sacred Blend Hydrosol, a gorgeous and intensely scented hydrosol created using freshly cut white sage, cedar, and juniper is now available at The Scented Djinn Etsy Apothecary. Our hydrosols are slow distilled in copper or glass, and we never remove the essential oil, so you get a high quality, intensely fragrant product. A little goes a long way. This particular hydrosol is not intended for use on skin, or internally. It is a sacred blend used by Native Americans to 'smudge' before, during, and after ceremony, and is used by all manner of human folk to cleanse their sacred spaces, be it a bedroom, an entire home, or a ceremonial space. Smudging is done by lighting the dried plant material and allowing the smoke to cleanse the space of bad spirits or negativity. Now this can be done using a non-burning medium with the same result. Modhlim, the newest addition to The Scented Djinn's perfumes is up for sale May 15, 2014. This is a complex floral enveloped in dark, smoky tea notes, musk, moss, grasses, and savory spices.

Finally, the Rose Rock soaps are done and ready to put up on Etsy. Made with a perfumed scent formulation based around patchouli and rosey essences, this is one nice, hunky, chunky, clay spa style soap that's just waiting to make you feel special. The base soap formula is made with extra virgin olive oil, organic virgin coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, shea butter, and loads of skin detoxifying red clay. At just the right moment, the perfume was added, made with an aged patchouli oil, bois de rose oil, clary sage oil, bergamot, blood orange, petit grain sur fleur neroli, and lavandin abrial. The soaps have a dusky rose and earth scent to them. Very nice.
